Oona - choir manager (Cardiff)

I grew up in Wales but left in 2015 and lived in Brighton and then London, working for St Mungos and more recently at Glass Door Homeless charity. Moving back to Wales I wanted to get more involved in the community and came across the Choir with No Name. I couldn’t believe such a well-rounded, fun charity existed!

Throughout my time working in the homelessness sector, one of my favourite parts of the job was connecting with people, hearing their stories and getting people involved in communities where they felt safe and understood. One thing that stuck out to me was how much being creative in a community setting can foster well-being.

I’ve always loved music and in the first lockdown, after trying and failing at crocheting, I started dabbling in music production and now I like to make a bit of experimental techno, using inspiration and recordings from sounds I hear day to day. I love all music though, you could play the BBC theme tune and it would get me grooving!

While at university I was a part of SHEchoir a choir entirely run by the members. It was a welcoming, fun and empowering community to be part of and when I saw the opportunity to be choir manager in Cardiff and I thought what a great chance to combine my love for music, community and working with people affected by homelessness and marginalisation. I can’t explain how excited I am to be here!
